Small Scottish Tree Nurseries: Phase 1

Carried out by: Future Woodlands Scotland

Summary Description:

The main objective of the project is to bring the key representatives from small-scale native tree nurseries located within the more remote locations of Scotland, including the Western and Northern Isles, and representatives from associated organisations together. In turn, with the aid of a facilitator, the structured day in the form of a workshop, will aim to enable discussion and highlight areas that may benefit from co-ordinated support, for example education, training or research.

Expected outcomes could be the delivery of clear pathways to improving the effectiveness, scope, scale and efficiency of small native nursey production in Scotland.

Timescale: 2023 - 2024

SFT Funds Awarded: £5,400

Project Outcomes:

The first phase of this initiative, which aimed at identifying and supporting the development of tailored solutions for small and remote tree nurseries, culminated in a physical workshop organised by Future Woodlands Scotland. This workshop took place at the Trees for Life Dundreggan Rewilding Centre in Inverness-shire from August 20th to 22nd, 2024.

The event brought together around thirty representatives from small nurseries and other organisations from across Scotland, including the Shetland Isles and the Hebrides, Argyll and Dumfriesshire. The topics, primarily facilitated by Andy Robinson, included efficiencies in the nurseries; sourcing materials; marketing and on-line profile; pricing, packaging and transport; administration, legal and compliance; training and development; and routes to further support.

There was also ample opportunity for informal and formal discussion, as well as a brief visit to the Trees for Life’s nursery located at the Dungreggan Rewilding Centre. With thanks to Jill Hodge, the Nursery Manager, and her team for the tour.
